Kimberley Brown

Public Health Engineer, First Nation Health Authority 

Kimberley Brown has been a Public Health Engineer with FNHA since September 2022 and works from X̱wemelch’stn (Homulchesan) of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish Nation), colonially known as Park Royal in West Vancouver. She is a member of the Lax Kw’alaams band and has ties to the Brooks family. Kimberley graduated from the University of British Columbia in 2019 with a degree in chemical engineering. In her time so far at FNHA, she has reviewed septic systems, water distribution extensions/replacements, proposed water treatment plants, chemical contamination remediation plans, and more. Prior to this role, she was a consultant who specialized in water treatment design and asset management. Due to her experience in asset management, she is passionate about mapping community infrastructure.

Alan Shapiro

Principal, Shapiro and Company

Alan Shapiro is an environmental consultant with more than a decade of experience in water and sustainability. Through his consultancy, Shapiro & Company, he works with small business, non-profit, and government organizations to accelerate collective action on water, climate, and nature. In addition to his consulting practice, Alan teaches in the Sustainable Business Leadership program at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and has served as a strategic advisor to a number of water clusters and networks including the Working for Watersheds initiative, Our Living Waters, and Foresight Canada’s waterNEXT network. He holds a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering from Columbia University, a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Earth Sciences from the University of Alberta, and a Professional Certificate in Behavioural Insights from the University of British Columbia.

Lucy Rodina

Senior Policy Advisor, Canada Water Agency

Dr. Lucy Rodina has 14 years of experience leading research on water governance, resilience, and environmental sustainability, including over 6 years of federal government experience at Infrastructure Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada in policy and program design, including strategic planning for investments in water infrastructure and natural infrastructure, and federal water policy. Her areas of expertise include water policy, water resilience, climate change adaptation, natural infrastructure, and evidence-based policy research and development.

 

Since 2020, Lucy has worked on the creation of the Canada Water Agency, where she currently leads on policy research and developing advice on priority water topics. Dr. Rodina holds a PhD from the University of British Columbia in resource management and environmental sustainability, and is an Adjunct Professor at UBC’s Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability. Her professional experience also includes managing staff, securing funding, coordinating international research efforts, and designing, leading and project managing multi-year research programs in Canada and South Africa. Dr. Rodina has published on a range of topics in academic journals and other media, including 14 peer-reviewed articles on water resilience, environmental justice, water as a human right, access to water for marginalized communities, and transformative change in social-ecological systems.
